John specializes in theory, classical, jazz, country and rock. His style has been described as jazz, with a twist that unites jazz with the blues and rock for a unique blend and sound that defies categorizing. He is well versed in technique, theory and composition and has written, recorded and performed several of his own songs. He is highly skilled in all types of guitars, including Classical, Electric, Acoustic and Bass.

Private Lessons

Private lessons are provided at a reasonable rate to students of all age groups, and include music note reading, proper guitar technique, articulation, fingering, scale and chord progression, as well as composition and music theory.


Beginning classes are generally scheduled for 30-minute, 45-minute or 60-minute sessions, once a week. More advanced students may opt to arrange for longer or more frequent sessions. All lessons are paid monthly, in advance.


Students will be interviewed prior to their first class session and will be provided with a list of items and learning materials to bring with them for their first session. Two of the course materials currently in use by beginning students are the Mel Bay Beginning Guitar Book 1 and the Mel Bay Guitar Chords. Materials may vary based on the students' background and level of expertise.

Introduction

John is a guitar instructor, composer and performer and recently moved to Baton Rouge from Lake Charles, Louisiana, where he had returned to his southern roots after spending several years in Las Vegas, Nevada.

While living in Las Vegas, John taught Guitar and Rock Music History at the College of Southern Nevada and also provided private lessons. Prior to teaching at the College of Southern Nevada, John taught at the Houston Music Institute and Musicville Studios, both located in Houston, TX, and the Zeagler Music Company in Baton Rouge, LA.

Background and Performance

John has performed, composed, managed, produced and instructed guitar for over 30 years. He has performed and toured throughout the United States as a lead guitarist, vocalist and bandleader, as well as establishing two bands of his own: The Garden District, which was the opening act for Sly and the Family Stone, Roy Ayers Ubiquity and The Neville Brothers, and The John Plauché Group, which featured Chester Daigle of Tower of Power and Spyro Gyra. He has also performed with other recording groups, including Cameo the year they experienced their international breakthrough with the album “Word Up”. John has opened concerts for groups as diverse as Sly and the Family Stone and The Neville Brothers and conducted seminars with bassist Bunny Brunel of the Chic Corea Group and drummer Chad Wackerman of the Frank Zappa Band. John also toured with Luther Kent, a great New Orleans bluesman who toured as the lead singer for Blood, Sweat & Tears in the mid-70's and has gone on to have a successful career as a performer and producer. John has also performed with the late legendary Calvin Owens, who was B.B. King's arranger/conductor, as well as Danny Ward, arranger/keyboardist for Andy Williams. He performed with the Houston Jazz Orchestra, was co-producer and arranger for a Public Service Announcement for the American Cancer Society, and was voted in the “Top10” of Houston Guitarists while residing in Houston, Texas.

In addition, John has Applied Theatre Experience in Fiddler on the Roof, Man of LaMancha, You're a Good Man Charlie Brown and The Nutcracker : Ballet Joeux as well as Applied Music Experience as Staff Guitarist and Soloist in various musical productions, including The Rocky Horror Picture Show, A Confederacy of Dunces, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Jesus Christ Superstar and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. He was the featured guitar soloist with the Baton Rouge Symphony Pops Series and has worked with a variety of musicians over the years, including Miles Johnson and Ronnie Hall of Aretha Franklin, Graham Lear of Santana and Bobby Lakind of The Doobie Brothers.

John is available as a guitar soloist, composer, vocalist, as well as to sit in on recording sessions and live performances.
